Rethinking PHL’s farm policies

THE goal of raising annual farm output by as much as 5 percent prompted the government more than a decade ago to start increasing the budget for the agriculture sector. That target, however, remained elusive. Despite billions of pesos poured into agricultural interventions, the expansion of crops and fisheries output from 2008 to 2017 never breached the 4-percent mark. And going by the recent statement of the chief of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the sector again exhibited lackluster performance in 2018 as output rose by a measly 1 percent.

Uruguayan fruit producers reduce pests by up to 90% with biological control

A group of Uruguayan fruit producers, in partnership with a pest management program developed by the Ministry of Livestock and the Faculty of Agronomy, has been able to reduce the use of chemical pesticides between 80% and 90%. According to them, this was possible thanks to the application of biological control techniques of citrus pests.

ADAMA Signs MOU to Acquire Huifeng’s Crop Protection

Leading global crop protection company ADAMA Ltd. (the “Company”) (SZSE 000553) today reported it has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture Co., Ltd (“Huifeng”) (SZSE 002496), a chemicals manufacturer located in Dafeng, Jiangsu Province, for the potential acquisition of key parts of its crop protection business.
