The second-quarter economic growth numbers were released and the government is contemplating significantly reducing the import duties on certain agricultural products. The two stories may seem unrelated. That’s not the case.
The GDP increased by 6 percent in the second quarter, well below the optimistic expectations. You can find a tremendous amount of finger-pointing as to why the GDP came in at 6 percent instead of higher. Some of it will be reasonable analysis; some of it will be political agenda.
However, the internals of the data highlight the problem that has been plaguing the country and the economy for decades, and is still not being addressed.
