Farmers ready to plant more crops with P103-million road project in remote Surigao village

DAVAO CITY—Farmers burdened with P100 transport cost of farm products said they were ready to plant more crops than get discouraged when a road project would finally take off in their remote village in the municipality of Mainit of the Northeastern Mindanao province of Surigao del Norte.

Farmers like Antonio Libaya grew up carrying loads of abaca fiber to the town center from Bobonaon, a far-flung village located in the upland communities of this town, the World Bank-funded Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP) said, when it approved the funding for the rural road connecting the village to the nearest barangay center about 9 kilometres away.

“When I was young, we sold abaca to the town center carrying the load, and we walked the muddy road. There was no other way,” he said as he described the discouraging road condition connecting the farms.
