PhilMaize rejects zero tariff for imported corn

Corn planters belonging to the Philippine Maize Federation Inc. (PhilMaize) said they are okay with the proposed importation of 300,000 metric tons (MT) of yellow corn to pull down the price of animal feed, but not at zero tariff.

Corn planters belonging to the Philippine Maize Federation Inc. (PhilMaize) said they are okay with the proposed importation of 300,000 metric tons (MT) of yellow corn to pull down the price of animal feed, but not at zero tariff.

PhilMaize President Roger V. Navarro told the BusinessMirror that planters will not oppose importation as there is a need to augment the shortfall in local corn supply.

What they are opposing, Navarro said, is the reduction of tariff on corn to zero as proposed by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
